Some people build careers. Others build communities.
For decades, if you have lived on Tamborine Mountain, there is a very good chance you have known Nadia Simmons.
Perhaps she was the smiling face who welcomed your child into childcare at Tamborine Mountain College on their very first day away from home.
Perhaps she gently wiped away tears, tied shoelaces, read favourite stories or offered the reassuring smile every child needs when the world feels just a little too big.
If Nadia didn’t care for you, chances are she cared for your brother, your sister … or now, your own children.
That is the extraordinary legacy of Nadia Simmons.
After 11 years as a cherished member of the Tamborine Mountain College family, Nadia began her well-earned long service leave on Friday, 31 July, before officially retiring at the end of the year.
While the College celebrates this exciting new chapter, saying goodbye to someone so deeply woven into our College community is no easy task.
Born in South Africa before immigrating to Australia with her parents, Nadia has devoted her life to caring for children.
For decades, she nurtured generations of young people across Tamborine Mountain through childcare and early learning before becoming one of the most loved members of the Tamborine Mountain College family as a Prep Teacher Aide and a valued member of our Before and After School Care and Early Learning Centre teams.
Long before many of our current students were born, Nadia was already helping children take their very first steps into learning.
She understood something simple but profound: education begins with feeling safe, feeling valued and feeling like you belong.
That philosophy has shaped thousands of young lives.
To list Nadia’s roles, however, is to miss the point.
Nadia was never defined by a position title.
She was the reassuring presence that settled nervous little hearts, the familiar smile children searched for and the trusted friend families knew they could rely upon.
She possessed a remarkable gift that cannot be taught – every child who crossed her path felt important; every family felt welcomed; every interaction reflected genuine care.
There are few people whose influence extends across an entire community. Nadia is one of them.
Her legacy cannot be measured by lesson plans or years of service.
It lives in the confidence of children she encouraged, the families who trusted her, the colleagues she inspired and the countless acts of kindness that often went unseen but were never unfelt.
As Nadia begins this next chapter, she leaves a community that is kinder because of her and generations of children who entered the world with greater confidence because she believed in them.
There is a beautiful quote by Maya Angelou that says: “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
If ever there was someone who embodied those words, it is Nadia Simmons.
As she prepares to close this remarkable chapter, Nadia leaves behind not just a career, but a legacy of love, kindness and unwavering dedication.
“Thank you Mrs Melbourne, Mrs Stevens and Mr Stevens and all my amazing colleagues past and present for being a part of my wonderful journey at Tamborine Mountain College,” said Nadia.
“I am truly grateful and will forever treasure the special bonds and experiences with all the past and present TMC students and their families.
“Some people enter our lives for a short time. Others pause and plant seeds in our hearts that will bloom forever!”
Some people spend a lifetime making a difference. Nadia Simmons spent hers making people feel they mattered.
There is no greater legacy than that.
