The memory of local war veterans was honoured ahead of Anzac Day when a group of locals cleaned up their graves.
A group of ten volunteers, including two young girls, went to the cemetery armed with scrubbing brushes, water and detergent to clean the graves of some 30 ex-servicemen and women.
Organiser Roger Lenehan said they placed a small Australian flag and poppy at each grave to show that although they were no longer with us, they were not forgotten.
“It is a small thing to do. Many of those buried there have no family living on the mountain and no one to tend to their graves,” he said.
“It was lovely to see so many volunteers, including younger people. Cleaning the graves was a way of showing respect to those who served Australia in times of need.
Roger said he was inspired to clean the graves through the work of the Norman VC Foundation which cleans military graves.
He said the oldest graves at the cemetery date back to the first world war, with others from the Afghanistan conflict as well as Vietnam.
