What is Neurographic Art? – Rewiring your brain through Art

By Patricia Arora

Remember the days when ‘doodling’ in our school notebook covered more page space than the notes themselves and yet the learning process was engaged?

Neurographic Art is a doodler’s upgraded version, available to individuals or social groups.

All you require is paper and a pencil /pen (coloured ones add more interest).

TMCCA clients enjoy this activity during the Social Support Groups.

The creative process draws the group members into an ‘integrated present moment’, in the warm company of friends.

It is also a fulfilling way to spend time alone as well, in the comfort of your own home and use those old, forgotten colour pencils…

This art form apparently works with the subconscious mind through drawing curved shapes, connecting and intersecting the shapes with curved / squiggly lines, then softening sharp corners and colouring in.

The creative technique is intended to transform one’s stress/fear into a beautiful work of creative expression.

Participation along with friends multiplies the benefits of wellbeing!

For those who do not identify as ‘doodlers, this activity could be another way to enjoy some artistic ‘me-time’ or a creative session with friends.

A simple technique:

  1. Use a felt tip pen to draw circles, ovals any curved shapes on your paper.
  2. Draw looping or crisscrossing lines to cut across the circular shapes
  3. Optional: If you want to use the art therapy application – think of an issue you are facing while you draw the line. Let the pen and paper guide you.
  4. Fill in any sharp corners where lines intersect by ‘rounding off’.
  5. Add colour … enjoy!
