April in the Garden

By Tamborine Mountain Garden Club Inc.

Cultivating knowledge, friendship and good will through gardening

April on the mountain sees purples and pinks as the dominant colours dotted around the landscape. Tibouchinas, bougainvilleas, salvias and japonica camellias are putting on a stunning display, as we head into the cooler months.

What to plant in April

In the veggie patch sow or plant seedlings of asian greens, basil, beans (french and climbing), beetroot, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, chives, coriander, cucumber, eggplant, garlic, kale, kohlrabi, leek, lettuce, parsley, radish, rocket, silver beet, spring onion, swede, sweet corn, tomatoes, turnip.

For some colour sow or plant seedlings of billy buttons*, blue lace flower*, delphinium, everlasting daisy* flannel flower*, globe amaranth, hollyhock, lobelia, marigold, native bluebell*, nigella, pansy, pink billy buttons*, poppy, primula, showy everlasting*, snapdragon, stock, strawflower*, sweet pea, viola, virginia stock, or wallflower.

Jobs to do

Here are a few ideas to get you into the garden.

  • pinch off excess japonica camellia buds from crowded clusters, leaving just one bud, for bigger blooms
  • collect and store seeds as warm season crops like beans, chilli, dill, fennel, parsley and tomatoes come to end
  • apply a layer of mulch to your vegies to act as a blanket to protect the roots in the cooler months
  • prune crepe myrtles if you want to reduce their size or reshape them
  • move dormant tuberous begonias to a dry spot for the colder months
  • continue to apply seaweed solution to newly planted vegetables to encourage good root growth

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday April 14 at 9.30am in the Vonda Youngman Community Centre – visitors and new members welcome

Happy gardening everyone!
