The lovable and humorous family folk band Haystack Mountain Hermits have been nominated as finalists for the Australian Folk Music Awards (AFMA) under the People’s Choice category.
The AFMA People’s Choice award recognises outstanding folk performers for their activity over the year and is open to the public to decide the winner.
Bass player and Mother of the Hermits Kerrie Gambley was ecstatic to be nominated, yet again, for the AFMA awards.
“It’s absolutely fantastic – we’re really chuffed and so thrilled to be part of the AFMAs again, especially the People’s Choice award because it means a lot to us,” she said.
“Every band has their own fan community, but it’s really cool when awards like this reach into other communities and I know we’ve got some great support from my hometown – Haystack Mountain.”
For the Hermits, taking home the win would be a bonus as they are already overjoyed to have made it as far as becoming finalists.
“It’s always very special when you’re recognised by communities, by peers, and by judges as well in the industry – it’s very special to even just get into the finals,” Kerrie said.
“Honestly, we don’t have any expectations, we’re just really thrilled to make the finals again – if we did win something, we’d just be utterly over the moon.”
The family of six have been performing for over 13 years with their love for music still blossoming.
“It’s a very special feeling – we started when the kids were really little and we were busking as we travelled around Australia,” Kerrie said.
“The kids were literally learning the instruments in the back of the van as we travelled.”
Kerrie enjoys being able to share the stage with her family and hopes their music fills people with as much joy as she feels when performing.
“Sometimes I just stand there on stage and you’re singing a beautiful harmony with your family, and it gives you goosebumps,” Kerrie said.
“I think all of us just hope that the joy that we feel on stage radiates out – that people find some joy and happiness in what can be a tough life.”
