A DROUGHT-STRICKEN city, a corrupt corporation, and a fight for freedom set the stage for Urinetown the Musical, Tamborine Mountain Little Theatre’s daring new production for 2026.
Director Julie Smith said the satirical production will offer audiences a mix of humour, energy and social commentary when it opens in 2026.
“It’s a satire – clever, funny and thought-provoking,” she said.
“It’s set in a city suffering from a decades-long drought, where a powerful company controls access to public amenities and charges exorbitant fees. The story follows a group of people who rise up to fight for freedom.”
Originally written by Greg Kotis and Mark Hollmann, Urinetown earned ten Tony Award nominations and won three, including Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical.
Julie said the show’s themes feel “more relevant today than when it was written.”
“In a world where water rights and corporate control are real issues, the message resonates deeply,” she said.
“But it’s all done through humour and memorable music that audiences can hum along to.”
After several years away from directing, Julie said returning to the stage has reignited her creative spark.
“It’s exciting to be back,” she said.
“Tamborine Mountain Little Theatre hasn’t done a musical like this for many years, and everyone is really enthusiastic about it.”
Julie, who has directed productions including Beauty and the Beast and The Wizard of Oz, is now calling for actors, singers, dancers and musicians aged 16 and over to get involved.
“I’m looking for energy and commitment – the ability to move, act and sing,” she said.
“We’ll also have live music, and I’m hoping to round out our band with a drummer, bassist and flautist.”
An expression of interest session will be held at Tamborine Mountain Little Theatre on Saturday, November 8, from 2.30pm to 3.30pm, with auditions scheduled for Sunday, January 11, 2026.
“This is a chance for our community to bring something vibrant and meaningful to the stage,” Julie said.
“It’ll be an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.”
