These small but feisty little dogs were bred mostly from the rough double coated terriers brought out from Great Britain in about 1820.
They were used as farm dogs by helping to eradicate mice and rats but they can be good snake catchers too.
Primary traits for many terrier dog breeds are being feisty, fast and energetic. They vary in size from small to large to grand; like the Airedale terrier dog. There are about thirty recognised terrier breeds.
Aussie Terriers are courageous, loyal, spirited and usually even-tempered.
Their shaggy long outer coat and short undercoat is considered hypoallergic as the fur sheds little.
They weigh from 5.5 – 7.5kg and live between twelve to fifteen years. Exercise requirements are moderate to high, so is the need for mental stimulation.
The positives of this breed are that they can live well in units as long as they get sufficient exercise, however they can be barkers; it is a part of the ‘watchdog’ instinct.
They are low maintenance, only requiring a good brushing once or twice a week and a bath occasionally.
Good with children, however, all children and pets need supervising because often children can accidently hurt an animal plus any stressed pet can bite.
If socialised at a young age Aussie terriers can get along with other pets, however a pet rabbit or guinea pig may be pushing the hunt-prey drive too much.
These dogs are very self-confident and it is not unusual for them to take on a much larger dog. Aussie Terriers are hardy and can make loving, smart companions.
The cons of owning an Aussie terrier are: high energy requiring physical and mental stimulation. They can become stubborn or bossy if not trained. Most terriers love digging, so if someone is a keen gardener it may be a good idea to build a sandpit and burry surprises there.
This breed can also be a regular barker, but with exercise and training this can be reduced.
They are susceptible to auto immune diseases like diabetes mellitus.
They may have a tendency towards a luxating patella. Inherited diseases can be reduced by ethical breeders, so always check when buying a dog from a breeder.
