Team players

Anyone who knows me well, knows my husband and I are diehard Brisbane Lions fans.

I recently listened with interest to an interview with one of the young gun Lions players, Levi Ashcroft.

Levi’s role on the wing does not receive the attention and accolades awarded to players in the centre and upfront.

When asked about this, he replied that he’s really grateful for the opportunity to develop various skills and appreciate every position on the field.

He stated the team sees roles very differently.

Every member’s contribution is as important as another.

The team had just had its seventh consecutive win and Levi said they are playing their best football because everyone is playing selflessly.

The ball is freely shared and every action is about the team and not about individual ego.

You may not be part of a football team but we are each part of a spectrum of teams.

Whether it be family, community, sport, a band of colleagues, a social club, a group of friends; selflessness is the foundation of true teamwork.

Trust grows in an environment where everyone works for the greater good of the team.

When you know that the people around you care just as much about your success as they do theirs.

A culture of selflessness rather than selfishness is fun to be a part of.

We are uplifted and encouraged.

The bonds created and the enduring connections leave a more lasting impact than the team’s successes.

Today’s hyper-focus on individual success is eroding the unique bond that is found in the strength of cohesive teams.

Helen Keller said, “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.”

Our collective impact is so much greater than the sum of our individual attempts.

Shared effort beats individual ego every time…. Go the Lions!
