Veterans, members of the Australian Defence Force, cadets and community members came together at the cenotaph to mark Remembrance Day on Tamborine Mountain.

The rain held off and attendance was high as people gathered under a heavy sky for the sombre service.

Marking 106 since the end of World War One it was a time for reflection of the past and acknowledgment of the wars currently raging in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Leading the service was David Hansen Vice President of the Tamborine Mountain RSL Sub-Branch who recalled the life of freestyle swimmer Cecil Healy who lost his life in the First World War at Somme. 

Veteran Royal Navy and Australian Army soldier Gordon Issom delivered the poem In Flanders Fields and the Remembrance Prayer was given by retired Sub-branch padre Frank White.

Sue Duncan played the piano for the service on a pump organ built in 1845.

Who has been playing the bugle at the service for almost 20 years. 

“It was a good turnout with strong community support recognising our veterans with the laying of the wreaths,” David said.

The oldest attending veteran was Allan Rosser at 99-years-old as well as Joe Mulders, 97 and 94-year-old Elyn Young.

Light refreshments were held at the Tamborine Mountain RSL at the Memorial Bowls Club following the service.
