Memories forever sealed in glass

AFTER the death of a loved one many families are handed a large urn container with the ashes.

For some that urn stays at home, while many will keep them until they find an appropriate time and place to cast the ashes to the wind or let them float away.

It’s all part of remembering someone and helps many to deal with their loss.

On Tamborine Mountain local artist, Faerie Fleur offers a unique way of capturing and cherishing those memories by creating Ashes in Glass artworks.

For Faerie its a highly personal experience and she says she’s always honoured when a family asks her to use a small portion of the ashes and bind them into a unique glass artwork.

“To see them smile when I hand them the finished work is a moving experience for them and also myself,” she said.

While Ashes in Glass is only a small part of Faerie’s business she holds it close to her heart.

Operating from a large studio her glass blowing business has continued to grow since she first started it alongside her other ventures in 2019.

While the effects of Covid proved a negative for many businesses it was the opposite for Faerie.

“People had time on their hands and they were looking for hobbies, in particular ones where they could express themselves,” she said.

“Some decided they wanted to explore the wonders of glass blowing and I welcomed them with open arms.”

Tamborine Glass Blowing now runs several beginner classes and workshops where you can be fully supported in a creative, inspiring and safe environment.

During a glass blowing class of up to three people, you will learn a wide range of essential glassblowing techniques and create perfect pieces for your home.

Once competent you can proceed to making such pieces as a beautiful bowl, a glass or a vase.

“The spacious studio has a wide range of equipment and tools suitable for both beginners and advanced students of glass blowing, slumping, lampwork, torchwork and mosaic work,” Faerie said.

“I have now started a come and watch experience I have named Saturday Night Live.”

“It gives a small group the opportunity to enjoy a social night out for a few hours and watch as I create and explain glass blowing.”

“It’s already proving extremely popular with people coming from as far away as Ipswich and even Toowoomba to attend.”

“I’d love to have more locals come along and experience this art firsthand, but they will need to book online.”
