RETIRED local doctor Alan Secombe’s 33 year career as a country doctor has been recognised with one of the Australia’s highest honors.
Dr Secombe’s name was recently listed in the King’s Birthday Honors list as a recipient of a Medal of the Order of Australia, OAM.
During his medical career he worked in numerous country towns including Bellingen and Tamworth before making a long term commitment to the Murwillumbah region from 1984 until his retirement in 2017.
During that time he was heavily involved in the local community and in particular the Murwillumbah District Hospital.
His passion for cricket and rugby league led him to affiliations with many sporting clubs in the region and in 2000 he was appointed as the manager of the Australian Masters Cricket team for its tour of England.
On receiving the award he said he was humbled by his nomination for the OAM by the Murwillumbah community.
“It revealed to me that my commitment to the area’s residents was truly valued,” he said.
The doctor and his wife Cheryl moved to the greener pastures of Tamborine Mountain from Pottsville more than three years ago.
He says he has now discovered that you can have as much fun in the garden as you can fishing on the beach.
