Under a bright Australian blue sky the Tamborine Mountain RSL Sub Branch held their Remembrance Day Service at the Tamborine Mountain Circle of Remembrance.
RSL Sub Branch President, Phillip Hunter, gave a welcome address in which he told of the story of the Curlewis family who sent four sons to Gallipoli – three of whom died in action.
The last remaining son, George Curlewis, was deemed medically unfit and repatriated. He lived to the ripe old age of 91 years.
Phillip also spoke of Mary McFarlane, a nurse from South Australia who, over a short period of time, rose to be deputy Matron.
Mary lost her life during the sinking of the AHS (Australian Hospital Ship) Centaur which was sunk by enemy fire just a few kilometres from North Stradbroke Island. Moreton Bay.
It was good to see a large turnout at the Service considering Remembrance Day is not a national holiday.
