Mayor’s column

IT WAS pleasing to see the turnout at recent Remembrance Day commemorations across the Scenic Rim, including Tamborine Mountain and Tamborine.

This year marks the 110th anniversary of the commencement of World War One and, more than a century after the guns fell silent on the Western Front in 1918, our community still shows an unwavering commitment to honouring our servicemen and women of all conflicts.

Commemoration is particularly close to my heart.

While living and working in Sydney during the late 1980s, I served as Junior Vice President of The Gallipoli Club, of which I am now a life member.

And, in 2015, I was pleased to assist a Centenary of Anzac project undertaken by the Canungra RSL Sub-branch by sharing the stories of members of my family who were among the more than 130 men and women of the Canungra and surrounding districts who served in World War One.

My thanks to everyone who attended or involved in organising Remembrance Day commemorations which bring our community together.

Sudden storms and the recent Get Ready event at the Tamborine Mountain Sports Association have been timely reminders of the need to prepare for what may be another season of extreme weather.

Following the Christmas Night storm and New Year flooding, residents of Tamborine Mountain, Tamborine and surrounding areas certainly understand the need to be prepared for extended periods without power and the importance of community connection.

New residents from urban areas may not understand the risks of flood and fire we face in the Scenic Rim so I encourage you to get to know your neighbours and share your local knowledge.

Whether it’s storms or bushfires, we all need to have a ‘what if’ plan.

Now is the time to clear gutters, trim overhanging trees and check the yard for any items which could become projectiles in a storm.

If you have not already done so, please sign up for the Scenic Rim Disaster Dashboard at disasterdashboard.scenicrim.qld.gov.au/ With bushfire alerts, weather warnings and updates on road conditions and power outages, it has everything you need to know before, during and after a disaster.
