TAMBORINE Mountain small business owner Beth McKinley of Àine & Co. has been recognised at the Gold Coast Business Awards on September 24 with the 2025 Local Business Award for Outstanding Antiques, Arts, Crafts and Gifts – a win she describes as both “a shock” and “over the moon.”
“I didn’t really think we were going to win. I was just excited to be involved and to meet people,” she said.
“There were some big names there, so it felt huge to be recognised like that.”
Located along Gallery Walk, Àine & Co. reflects Beth’s personal story, with deep ties to her family history and heritage across England, Ireland, Scotland, and Scandinavia.
The business name, Àine, pays homage to her Irish ancestry, a connection she uncovered through the loss of her grandfather and a journey through family history and DNA.
Her approach to retail is rooted in storytelling – from the candle named 104, inspired by her grandmother’s garden, to carefully selected handmade items by artists who share her values.
“Everything in my shop has a story,” Beth said.
“If I can’t connect a memory or meaning to it, I won’t sell it. The people I stock – like Justine, who does my crochet, and Gary from Waterstone Pottery – have a connection to me or the community.”
The collaborative spirit extends beyond the mountain, too, with items sourced from meaningful relationships overseas, including handmade soaps from a Scottish mother Beth describes as “special.”
Beth said the Tamborine Mountain community has been essential to her growth.
“The people I’ve met, whether they’re other business owners, market friends, or just good listeners, have been so giving and supportive,” she said.
She credits her husband, children, and especially her 12-year-old daughter Skye as her greatest supporters.
“Skye’s in the shop with me most weekends,” she said.
“I took her to the awards night to show her what following your dreams can look like.”
