Under the Greenwood Tree is delighted to exhibit ceramic artist Mary-Lou Hogarth’s latest work “ The Treehouse Suite” from September 28 to October 31.
Portraits of Australian birdlife, from Kookaburras to Blue Wrens and Magpies, adorn these beautiful earthenware vessels and flying wall-mounted sculptures.
These works were recently on exhibition at Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery as part of the XX exhibition of leading Australian artists.
Mary-Lou has been working with clay for over 20 years.
During that time she travelled to various parts of Queensland teaching with the Flying Art School, and also conducted workshops throughout Australia.
Her works are held in numerous public and private collections including the Queensland Art Gallery, the Tasmanian Art Gallery and Museum, Parliament House Canberra and Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, amongst others.
Nowadays, Mary-Lou can be found living a quiet life in rural Victoria.
She loves the isolation of working in her studio and quietly contemplating life, nature and beauty.
Mary-Lou’s works are made from earthenware clay and usually slab built and decorated with underglaze colors and glazes. They are then twice-fired in an electric kiln.
“Clay has a memory and can’t ever be completely controlled but that is also a frustrating pleasure!“ she says.
The earthenware vessels created by Mary-Lou tell stories and histories of friends and lovers, families and farms, the environment and the state of the human spirit.
They are thought-provoking and reflective of our natural world and humanity.
