Further to a previous report, the rest of our club champions have now proudly represented our club at the Champion of Club Champions events run by the Gold Coast District association, with each of our singles champions holding their heads high despite losses in the first round. Special mention to our ladies champion, Susie Radford, who belied her lack of experience at the higher levels and pushed a junior state player all the way in an admirable performance. (Photo below)
Our Mens Pairs champions, who were Lance Cordingley and Bob Kirkright, managed to reach round 3, unfortunately without Bob who was sidelined by the need to recover from a medical intervention, but thanks to Dave Free and Mark Bujok who substituted for Bob to ensure our colours were flown at the event.
Our Pennant side achieved above expectations to reach the grand final, and although we ran the grand final winners very close late in the season, our side was unable to repeat the performance and came up a little short in the big dance at the end of August. Congratulations nevertheless, for our small club to compete so strongly against much larger clubs is an amazing achievement.
Junior bowler Damon Bartholomeusz (shared with the mega-club Helensvale) has secured his first gold medal in winning the Lifestream Pairs at the recent state titles, and we are so very proud of him!
Upcoming events include our annual Taipans Spring Triples on the October long weekend, our Women in Bowls games on December 6, and we expect to be entering the Summer 9’s competition to start soon and take us up to Christmas. All mountain residents and visitors are urged to keep an eye out for our highly social Thursday evening Twilight Bowls, starting again soon.
Finally, we are in the midst of the annual local derby for the Can-Tam Shield, playing our first game at Canungra on Saturday 13 September, and the return game will be this Saturday, 20 September at home, starting at 9.00am. We take a 17 shot lead into the home game, so hold high hopes to retain the Shield once more.
