SOCIAL touch football is set to resume on Tamborine Mountain, with weekly sessions taking place at the Tamborine Mountain Sports Association (TMSA) fields.
The social format first emerged in 2024 as an offseason outlet for Bushrats rugby league players and families, before expanding to include a wider mix of locals.
Organiser Brad Fowler said the initiative was intended from the outset to be inclusive and low-cost.
“It started in 2024 in the offseason for the Bushrats,” he said.
“It was just a case of coming on down and bringing a gold coin donation.”
Sessions regularly drew between 40 and 50 players during fair weather, with participants ranging from high school-aged teenagers to older community members.
“We had a really healthy mix last year,” Fowler said.
“We had high school kids, mums, dads, sisters, aunties and uncles. It was awesome.”
The weekly touch sessions paused late last year while organisers worked through venue and insurance requirements for the 2026 season.
Fowler said moving the activity to TMSA had been the turning point.
“It allows us to run under their insurance, which means we can keep it affordable,” he said.
“TMSA is also one of the better sporting facilities in the Scenic Rim, so that’s a bonus”
Fowler said the program’s appeal lay in its relaxed and social approach rather than competitive performance.
“We come for fun, we come for fitness, and we come for community,” he said.
“No one’s leaving with badges or trophies.”
While Fowler said no decisions had been made, he said that a formal competition was not off the table if interest continued to build.
“The competitive element was great, but it bled into the next week’s social element,” Fowler said.
“It would be interesting to see if people would be keen in rallying behind a more competitive competition.”
Games will be held Tuesdays from 6pm to 7pm at TMSA.
To participate, players can simply arrive on the night.
“There’s no formalities,” Fowler said.
“Just rock on down and play some footy. We’re all a bunch of friendly faces.”
