As a result of complaints made to me about election signage, Council has issued a media release “A sign of the Times” about the requirement to comply with local laws and the distances which apply to sign placement for safety reasons. Council can confiscate non-compliant signs. Those seeking election at the Federal level should surely be able to ascertain requirements and comply with the following: Fact Sheet re Election Signage(see page 3 of that document). Thank you to the one compliant candidate.
Gallery Walk carpark update – work has commenced on vegetation clearing and is expected to take two weeks. Where possible during the construction phase, access to the site will be via Huyber Lane. Initial work on the carpark will be internal to the site and will be undertaken prior to the commencement of work on the carpark entry on Gallery Walk, where a temporary access has been created. Road works are expected to commence September/October 2025, weather permitting.
Maintaining access to the existing business is top priority during the construction works and Council plans to reduce disruption as much as possible. The main disruptions to businesses will be the construction of the new concrete driveways which will cut off access in those locations for a minimum 8-10 days.
Council plans to utilise night works on the road section of works only (ie not the actual carpark). This is intended to be utilised during sections of the works with high traffic disruptions. Night works are also intended to help accelerate the works program in order to lower the impact on the local community. Night works add to the cost of the project.
Stages two to four of the Gallery Walk project are quite a way off, with funding for preliminary planning expected to be funded in the 2029-2030 Council budget, with the actual work to be done in the following two financial years.
Community consultation – Council’s draft 2025-2026 has been released for comment and feedback. Please take the opportunity to make comments via Let’s Talk Scenic Rim or to attend a face-to-face session at the Vonda Youngman Ctr from 5-7pm on Tuesday May 6, 2025. The notional proposed rate increase is 7%.
Meanwhile, subdivision applications continue to be lodged with Council (not for Tamborine Mountain) which fail to meet the requirements of the Planning Scheme re minimum lot sizes, average lot sizes, minimum street frontages etc. We have these restrictions for a reason – to ensure that housing density complies with the intent of the Scheme and that residential amenity is achievable. I will continue to vote against such subdivisions where the only concern of developers appears to be the maximum yield and maximum profit – after all, they don’t have to live where they develop.
