A Week in Serenity is an original play premiering in Queensland and soon to be performed at Zamia Theatre.
This play is almost written for the mountain you could say, and with a comedic twist … or two.
A Week in Serenity was written by Sydney playwright Georgie Wallace, and is directed by local thespian Deborah Joy Sykes, who has a stellar lineup with a cast of five females and two males.
Rehearsals are currently in full swing.
Maggie McMahon, a newspaper gossip columnist, arrives at a new age health resort in Queensland to write an article for the health section of her paper.
Looking forward to a week of luxury and relaxation at the trendy resort, she is aghast to find her accommodation is a wooden hut shared with three other middle-aged women – Sue, a divorcée from the Gold Coast; Di a mother of five from Woy Woy; and Roma a new age reiki practitioner from Byron Bay.
A hapless Roger Brewster has also added to the mix booking in for a week of respite after tending to his dying mother.
Maggie has no understanding of new age philosophy, health or fitness, nor hapless men pursuing her, and unwittingly begins on a journey of self-discovery.
She clashes with the charismatic libertine leader of Mt Serenity, Darryl Dexter, and is held to conform to the ‘serenity rules’ by the youthful assistant Abby.
The gossip columnist discovers hidden agendas and secrets and plans to expose them with proof of evidence, so as to keep her job and not be replaced by a younger rival.
A talent quest ends the week where further exposés are divulged, and when Darryl turns to his assistant Abby to seek ‘comfort’ … the plot thickens.
