There’s nothing quite like returning to a windy and wintry Tamborine Mountain after 10 days in the tropics.
As I unpacked my bags, my mind was still drifting through turquoise waters, rainforest-covered islands and unforgettable wildlife encounters from Heritage Expeditions’ Asian Island Odyssey.
From the moment I joined Heritage Adventurer in Bohol, Philippines, the journey felt different.
After exploring the island’s lush countryside, our first Zodiac transfer whisked us from a riverside lunch straight to our expedition ship—an unforgettable introduction to life at sea.
That afternoon we snorkelled the coral gardens of Balicasag Island, swimming alongside sea turtles over vibrant reefs.
Each day brought another remote corner of the Coral Triangle.
On Bucas Grande, we cruised through the limestone maze of Sohoton Cove before swimming among thousands of harmless jellyfish in the glowing blue waters of the sanctuary – a surreal experience I’ll never forget.
In Indonesia’s Tangkoko Nature Reserve, our local guides led us through rainforest alive with endemic wildlife.
We spotted critically endangered Crested Black Macaques, the tiny saucer-eyed tarsier and the elusive Sulawesi Bear Cuscus, each sighting reminding us just how special this region is.
Crossing the Equator earned me my ‘shellback’ status before we arrived in Gorontalo, where I experienced one of the trip’s true highlights: snorkelling with whale sharks.
Sharing the water with these gentle giants was humbling.
Equally inspiring was meeting Dr Ating on Malenge Island, whose conservation work is helping protect the area’s remarkable wildlife for generations to come.
As we continued through little-visited islands including Seho, Taliabu and Buru, the rhythm of expedition travel settled in – morning Zodiac cruises, walks through pristine forests, warm welcomes from local villages and the constant anticipation of what we’d discover next.
History came alive in Banda Neira, once the centre of the world’s nutmeg trade.
Today, its colonial streets, dramatic volcanic backdrop and spectacular snorkelling over lava-formed reefs make it one of Indonesia’s most fascinating destinations.
Our final stop, Kei Kecil Island, felt like paradise distilled – powder-soft white sand, crystal-clear water and thriving coral reefs filled with colourful marine life.
Yet it wasn’t the scenery I’ll remember most, but the heartfelt welcome from the local children’s choir and traditional dancers waiting for us on the beach.
More than a holiday, this voyage offered a deeper appreciation of some of the world’s most remote ecosystems and the people dedicated to protecting them.
