THE INADEQUATES have dropped their debut album Haven’t You Heard, marking a major milestone for the Tamborine Mountain trio.
In just two days, they’ll swap release-day excitement for the stage, opening their first national tour with a hometown show at The Knoll Studio on Saturday, August 30.
Known for their bright, mismatched suits and a line-up of banjo, mandolin, guitar and accordion, the band’s high-energy acoustic folk has been turning heads since their teenage busking days in Brisbane’s Queen Street Mall.
Saturday’s performance will be the first chance for fans to buy Haven’t You Heard.
“It’s pretty exciting,” Marcus said.
“It’s the first show of the tour, and it’s also the first opportunity people will get to buy a physical copy of our album – be it CD or a vinyl or whatever.”
It will also be the first time audiences see the band’s new suits on stage.
“We’’ll have some brand new bright suits on and some very bright harmonies, I suppose,” Jackson said.
Marcus said their live shows push the boundaries of what people expect from acoustic music.
“We’re trying to put as much energy as we can into the music to almost make it feel a bit rock-bandy, but without any of the rock band instrumentation – kind of like high-energy acoustic folk,” he said.
The choice to launch at The Knoll was as much about timing as sentiment, with the venue set to close.
“When we heard it was closing down, we knew we needed to lock in a date as soon as possible so we can at least play there once,” Jackson said.
“\“It’s always sad to see a venue go, but it’s always exciting when that venue gets bought out by someone and it stays as a venue. Hopefully something similar could happen with The Knoll.”
From The Knoll, the band will head to Sydney, Canberra, Wollongong, Port Macquarie, Ballina, Newcastle, Brisbane and Melbourne.
“It’s the first self-booked tour that we’ve done, and so we’re learning a lot about all of that as we go,” Lawson said.
“We hope to just keep riding the train.”
