The gateway to Tamborine has been given a striking new look, with the words ‘Welcome to Tamborine’ now installed on a public art piece along Beaudesert-Beenleigh Road near Middle Park.
Created by artist Colleen Lavender and funded by Scenic Rim Regional Council, the installation began in September 2025, with the final lettering completed in March 2026.
The piece is constructed from corten steel with stainless steel lettering – a combination Colleen said creates a distinctive contrast.
“For me, it suited the job. We wanted a bit of tension between earthy and rust and then the silver of the stainless steel being shiny and lovely,” she said.
Colleen explained the artwork reflects the rural character of Tamborine, drawing inspiration from her deep appreciation of the surrounding landscape.
“I love the mountains – I absolutely love the rainforest. The whole area is so rich and nurturing,” she said.
Her inclusion of horses represents the freedom and natural beauty of the region.
While many assume the piece represents the local community, Colleen said its true focus is the environment itself.
“I think most people think it’s supposed to represent us, but it doesn’t actually represent the people – it’s supposed to represent the place,” she added.
Scenic Rim’s Community, Arts and Culture Portfolio Councillor Kerri Cryer said the addition of the township’s name gives the artwork a stronger sense of identity, welcoming visitors arriving from the north as the first gateway to the Scenic Rim region.
“The identity of Tamborine, which quite often becomes lost in the shadow of the mountain, is very important to its community,” she said.
“This significant piece of public art enables a visual recognition for the township and for the pride of the people for their very beautiful piece of rural paradise.”
The installation has been largely well received by the public, with many embracing its celebration of Tamborine’s character.
Colleen hopes the piece will bring the community together and become a memorable landmark for visitors.
