TAMBORINE Mountain Little Athletics is gearing up for another big year after recording its strongest season yet in 2024.
The club attracted around 130 young athletes last season – the highest participation numbers in its history.
Secretary Fiona Jensen said the growth reflected the strong sense of community the program provides.
“We had our best season ever last year because it was our first full season at Long Road,” Fiona said.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming back returning members as well as new athletes. One of the great things about athletics is that there really is something for everyone. You might not be a runner, but you might be a jumper or a thrower – it’s such a broad range for kids to come down and have a go.”
The program caters for children from tiny tots through to under-17s, with senior athletes often stepping into leadership roles to support the younger age groups.
“Our senior athletes really create that sense of community and belonging for the smaller ones,” Ms Jensen said.
“It gives them familiar faces to look up to, and that support can make a big difference as kids move from primary to high school. It’s about community, friendship and confidence just as much as it is about sport.”
Fiona said families who are hesitant to try should consider the benefits of having all children involved in the same place at the same time.
“It’s a really fabulous way to finish a week in summer on the mountain,” she said. “Friday afternoons at the sports fields, the kids are having fun, parents are connecting, and it’s just a really nice vibe.”
Registrations for the 2025 season are now open.
“We’re already one of the most affordable sports on the mountain, and we also accept Queensland Government Play On vouchers, so families can apply those to their athletics fees,” Fiona said.
Families can also take part in the club’s “Come and Try” Open Day on Friday, October 10, with up to two trial sessions available per athlete.
