September planting

Tamborine Mountain gardeners can look forward to a vibrant spring this September, with warm soil and mild days creating ideal conditions for planting vegetables, flowers, and shrubs.

September is one of the best sowing months of the year, offering rapid germination and strong early growth.

What to plant

Vegetables to plant in September

Tomatoes take centre stage across Queensland in September, thriving in sunny, well‑drained positions and rewarding growers with heavy crops before summer heat arrives.

Other excellent choices for Tamborine Mountain’s subtropical climate include tomatoes, capsicum, cucumber, beans, basil, zucchini, pumpkin, sweetcorn, beetroot, and lettuce — all recommended for sowing or seedling planting this month.

Flowers to plant

Companion flowers such as sunflowers, chamomile, alyssum, yarrow, and nasturtiums perform well in early spring and help attract pollinators while deterring pests.

Hibiscus is also highlighted as a strong September performer in Queensland, thriving in sunny spots with slightly acidic soil.

Shrubs and trees

Evergreen natives including eucalypts and acacias are recommended for planting in September, benefiting from warming soil and consistent spring moisture.

These hardy species offer attractive foliage, bark, and flowers suited to mountain conditions.

Fruit trees such as guava, lemon, passionfruit, and pawpaw can also be planted now, taking advantage of the long growing season ahead. plantingseason.com.auplantingseason.com.au.

Garden jobs for September

Spring brings a surge of growth, making September an ideal time to refresh garden beds with compost and slow‑release fertiliser.

Prune spent flowers, tip‑prune natives, and keep watch for aphids and cabbage white butterfly caterpillars. Infrequent watering helps establish strong roots, while lawns benefit from feeding and patch‑seeding before summer.

Enjoyment in your garden

While your gardening boots and gloves are on, don’t forget to pause and admire your hard work.

Even better, have a cuppa or a glass of something refreshing in your favourite spot.

Our garden club’s premier event is Springtime on the Mountain, a trail of six magnificent gardens open for viewing on the last Friday, Saturday and Sunday of September.
