What do scarecrows have to do with Tamborine Mountain?

Actually, nothing, except 17 years ago a group of friends came up with idea for a Scarecrow Festival to celebrate the joys of living on Tamborine Mountain.

Seventeen years on and the festival has become a much-anticipated event in the calendar on the last weekend of October – this year from the 25th to the 27th.

A sculpture show of creativity using straw and a dose of imagination.

One of the early entries was a scarecrow dubbed Hayden, who, thanks to the care of Sandra McDonald, continues to make an appearance each year as the heart and soul of the festival.

Everyone is encouraged to enter the competition and display their scarecrows on the ‘Spot the Scarecrow Discovery Trail’ or in front of their home or business.

This year the event will include buskers along Gallery Walk and Main Street and an awards presentation at Fortitude Brewing Company on the 27th from 3pm to 5:30pm.

For the past eight years, a Children’s Colouring In/Poetry Competition aimed at

providing an outlet for budding artists and poets has proved to be a favourite with

five different categories for three to 12 years olds to win a prize, certificate and the

coveted ribbon.

The Senior Poetry Competition is another fun afternoon where Poets are given the opportunity to recite their poems and again win the coveted prize, certificate and ribbon.

Anne Hardy secretary for the Business Chamber Tamborine Mountain, which sponsors the event together with the Scenic Rim Regional Council and Eagle Heights Bakery said it was a chance for the community spirit to shine through.

“It is a very inclusive event. There is no one that can’t be involved and it brings visitors to the mountain sharing the joy,” she said.
