Mountain Mates – Scarecrow Festival

WITH a spark from Sandra McDonald from the Scarecrow Festival team in 2022, namely a workshop making ‘traditional’ scarecrows, Mountain Mates’ scarecrow skills have gone from basic to awesome.

The group tackled Minions in year two (assisted by materials and staff help from Bunnings Oxenford) and Superheroes in year three (when the message was ‘not all heroes wear capes’ – referring to Mountain Mates’ members and their families).

Creative Director for 2025 is Melody Choo, who chose a Disney theme.

This year and last the display site is outside Tamborine Mountain Bowls Club, which is such a great support to Mountain Mates.

Mickey, Minnie, a flock of Disney Princesses and other characters  Jayde and Hayley have a very topical surprise – will adorn the verge from Friday October 24 and over the weekend.

The SRRC Library assisted with a workshop venue, Bunnings staff Paula Vogel and Jayde Smith with their labour and materials, and community volunteer Margie Price, a dab hand with the sewing needle, helped the group keep on track.

Tragedy struck in the first year: Melody’s personal entry ‘Funny Clown George’ was burnt to the ground in a dastardly arson attack the night before judging, but Melody received a ‘posthumous’ award for him and has soldiered on.
