IT MAY have been a very small shop but the move to new premises for Under the Greenwood Tree was a marathon effort, only made possible by the hard work of friends and family.
After nearly eight years in the little shop on Main Western Road, the bookshop and gallery had clearly outgrown the space.
Now at Shop 4, Main Street Marketplace, the new premises offers the luxury of room to move so, amazingly, more than two customers can now browse with ease.
Light and airy, the space is a canvas that will showcase the work of artists and craftspeople and enable us to hold exhibition openings and author events in comfort.
The tempting proximity of our new premises to Hickory and Baileys, encourages visitors to enjoy a meal or drink next door or wander down Main Street for a coffee.
It seems entirely appropriate that the first exhibition to be held in the new space will be by Monte Lupo.
Having shown their artwork for over 25 years the connection with Monte Lupo is one that Janene Gardner values and feels grateful to have.
Monte Lupo was established by Multicap in 1991 to provide meaningful employment to people living with disability, with a focus on producing beautiful and unique pottery.
Many of the artists have received national and international recognition for their work, and Monte Lupo is regularly featured in exhibitions across Australia.
The theme for the new exhibition by Monte Lupo, “Literary Friends and Other Animals”, could not be more appropriate for Under the Greenwood Tree.
Books and art collide with wall sculptures, book stacks, totems and garden dwellers featuring characters from iconic books such as Alice in Wonderland, Possum Magic and Hairy Maclary, your literary and artistic senses will be in overdrive.
It is truly an art exhibition for both lovers of literature and animals.
