Broadcasting on the radio may sound like a nightmare for some, but for Year 5 and 6 students at Tamborine Mountain State School, it’s a much-loved weekly opportunity.
The first of its kind in Australia, the Schoolyard Sounds radio show is making its mark in community broadcasting.
The show runs on Switch Brisbane radio, covering the students’ interests and recent experiences as well as tackling serious and educational topics.
Principal Jason Smith was no stranger to radio broadcasting with years of experience under his belt hosting a show in his university days, followed by work for multiple stations around Christchurch, New Zealand.
His extensive history with radio fuels the passion that he passes onto his students.
“These guys are writing and researching their own segments, creating a buzz around their particular strengths and passions – and that takes time,” Mr Smith said.
“With all the other things they do outside of school, this now also adds another level of complexity to their little lives. It teaches them independence and a skill working outside of school to create something that is their own.”
Students working on the show put in plenty of hard work, learning valuable skills that extend beyond the studio, but they are also having a great time while doing it.
“It’s one of the best things I’ve ever volunteered for. It taught me a lot of life skills and it’s just a lot of fun,” Student Louis said.
“I love my segment…I get to learn all these fun facts about the movies I watch, and it’s so cool being able to share that with everyone,” Student Hannah said.
Listeners can tune in to previous Schoolyard Sounds episodes on Switch Brisbane Radio or experience the live broadcast each Wednesday from 2pm until 3pm on 1197AM, DAB+, iHeart Radio, TuneIn, Spotify and more.
Switch Brisbane is encouraging other primary and high schools to get on board.
