ORGANISERS of the Australia Day Tamborine Mountain Marathon have scored a coup by attracting world class ultra marathoner, Wayne Spies, to line up for next year’s race.
After a number of false starts in recent years the marathon is back under the guidance of Tamborine Mountain Sports Association who have appointed Guy Roberts as the race director.
Guy said it was hoped having one of Australia’s leading marathoners competing would prove an attraction for others to join him on the 42 kilometre course.
“The good thing about the local marathon is that relay teams of up to six members can also compete,” he said.
“In previous years the marathon has attracted as many as 300 competitors and we hope to match that number in 2025.
“The course is a 7km loop starting and finishing at the Tamborine Mountain Sports Centre on Long Road. It sees competitors running over grass, bitumen, trails and even along footpaths.
“As an added incentive for entrants we will put up a prize if they can record a faster lap than Spies”
Tamborine Mountain’s Bruce Hargreaves was responsible for bringing the marathon to the district after he started the run as an informal event with friends at Victoria Point back on Australia Day 2009.
When he moved to the area some years ago he realised the hinterland was the perfect place to hold it.
Major weather events caused the cancellation a few years ago, but this year organisers have got off to an early start promoting the distance event.
“A new updated website has been launched and that coupled with the announcement that Wayne Spies is coming has set the platform for us to stage the best ever local marathon,” Guy said.
