Local dancers shine in Brisbane ballet

Jennifer Smith and Daisy Reid

TWO Tamborine Mountain Dance Academy (TMDA) students shone at the Brisbane City Youth Ballet’s performance of The Wizard of Oz.

Jennifer Smith, 12, and Daisy Reid, eight, were chosen from students around Australia after a competitive selection process.

Jennifer was selected to dance in the ‘Main Company’ while Daisy was selected for the ‘Petite Company’.

The girls took part in multiple weeks of intensive rehearsals prior to their four performances to sell-out crowds at the Conservatorium Theatre in Brisbane. Both Jennifer and Daisy study the Vaganova method of classical ballet at TMDA.

It was Jennifer’s fourth season with BCYB and Daisy’s first, but she is eagerly anticipating more.

“Being a part of Brisbane City Youth Ballet was an incredible experience,” Jennifer said.

“The rehearsals were challenging, but rewarding and performing on stage with such a talented cast was a fantastic opportunity. I can’t wait to do it all again.”

TMDA principal and artistic director, Poppy-Jane Todd, said through their work with BCYB both girls have flourished as young performers.

“The rigorous training and performance opportunities afforded to them have refined the girls’ technique, deepened their artistry and strengthened their confidence,” she said.

“It’s wonderful to see both Jennifer and Daisy rising to the challenge and excel in such a professional environment.”
