Changing your mind

I’ve just enjoyed a yoga workshop with free thinking therapists and teachers sharing their wisdom.

Some of that wisdom would be considered radical in a one-track, one-mind world where the doctrine pushed hardest by the media channel becomes public belief.

It got me thinking of how long a belief takes to become part of the mass mind.

Start with Jesus, considered one of the most progressive, free- thinkers of all time.

A Palestinian Jew, a prophet, teacher and healer living under Roman rule, who died a political dissident.

Jesus taught a focus on inward mercy, inclusion, and an imminent kingdom of God, contrasting sharply with the social hierarchies of the time.

Prophet Muhammad (570 CE), a rebellious reformer because his message dismantled the entrenched tribal, economic, and religious hierarchies of pre-Islamic Arabia.

Buddha also systematically challenged the entrenched religious, social, and metaphysical dogmas of ancient India.

He offered his teachings, ordination, and spiritual community to all segments of society, including women and marginalised groups.

Why is this interesting?

Well, it illustrates the power of radical truth, unshackled by the influence of the hive mind.

It took 300 years for the teachings of Jesus, Buddha and Mohammed to become the dominant cultural and religious norm for ordinary people across those empires.

It’s believed that it takes just 10 to 25 per cent of a population to break the inertia of the mass mind and cause profound new beliefs to take hold.

A fascinating hope for those who are open to changing their minds.
