FINALS are on the horizon in the Cricket Gold Coast Premier League competition, and the Tamborine Mountain–Canungra Bushrats are looking to make their mark.
Currently sitting fourth in Division Three with two rounds to go, the Bushrats are on track to play in the elimination final if results fall their way.
Division Three captain David Andrews said the team had exceeded expectations after losing several players to other competitions.
“If I’m brutally honest, I did not anticipate being this high up in the ladder this time of year,” he said.
“A couple of guys have stepped up and played really well, so we’ve done remarkably well. I’m very happy.”
Andrews believes the team culture has made all the difference, particularly with new and returning players.
“We definitely get along within the team, and it’s a good environment,” he said.
“Sure, we want to win, but it’s not like if we don’t win, we’re going to start having a go at each other.”
The Bushrats hold a 10–5 win-loss record, and Andrews said their ability to win tight matches had been crucial.
“We’ve managed to win games that normally you shouldn’t really win,” he said.
“At different times in the season, different guys have stood up and either scored runs or taken wickets, and it’s made the difference in those games.”
They will face a major test ahead of finals with a local derby against first-placed Logan Village this weekend.
“They have been the standout team in the competition, and they’ve been very dominant, but they got beaten a few weeks ago,” he said.
“I know from past experience playing finals, it’s one-day cricket and you can have a good day and knock someone off.
“I think we’ve got a genuine shot.”
The Tamborine Over 40s men’s Division Two and Division Three sides finished sixth and ninth respectively, while the Division Two men’s community team is currently sitting 10th and the senior women’s side fifth.
