A proposed 7.9 metre advertising sign on Long Road has raised concerns it will set a development precedent.
The application, OPW25/064 for a freestanding advertising sign at 165-183 Long Road outside Fortitude Brewery, is currently before the Scenic Rim Regional Council.
Under the council’s Advertising Devices Code signs must be subordinated in scale and height, not dominate the streetscape or skyline and reflect the character of the surrounding area as well as avoid visual intrusion or traffic safety risks.
The proposed height would make it visible well beyond the site boundary significantly impacting the village feel and natural landscape of the mountain.
A number of residents have lodged objections to the sign stating it would set an undesirable precedent for Long Road as well as the whole mountain.
They fear that over time it could erode council’s planning scheme’s controls in relation to height, scale and character.
Gordon Chalmers said the distillery building is probably the tallest building on the mountain at a height of 7.9 metres from street level and that a sign of this size would be totally out of charter for everything he stands for.
“If council approved this it will be a tragedy,” he stated.
“Tamborine Mountain is not Las Vegas. It will block out the sun from 3pm onwards so we will all be in darkness.”
Two of the largest signs on the mountain are outside the IGA shopping centre and at 24-26 Main Street, they fall under District Centre Zone and are well below 7.9 metres.
The zoning at 165-183 Long Road is designated a Minor Tourism Zone.
The applicant, Hilton Property Investments Pty Ltd, only published notice of public submissions in the Beaudesert Times, rather than the Tamborine Mountain News and Scenic Rim Regional Council failed to upload details of the submission period until December 22, three days after the date on which submissions closed.
