Anthelid Moth Caterpillar – Anthela deficiens, picket fence, Driscoll Lane.
I can’t recall when I last photographed two subjects on my morning walk.
The first was the luculia which appeared in the previous issue but one.
The caterpillar was resting in the shadow of one of the pickets.
The Atlas of Living Australia has 15 isolated occurrence records of the moth from coastal North Queensland to the central coast of New South Wales.
There are seventy four described Australian species in the genus, of which two are also found in New Guinea. The caterpillar has a length of 4 cm.
The season suited the plant, but I felt that encountering the caterpillar was a bonus.
