There’s a certain comfort in returning to the same barber or hairdresser, the kind who knows exactly how you like it and have never delivered a bad result.
El Burro Cantina has built that same reputation when it comes to Mexican food and service.
Walking into the restaurant feels like arriving at a friend’s house for dinner, with chilli fairy lights, funky colours and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.
Above the bar, a vintage CRT television plays black and white Mexican films while frozen margaritas and palomas are crafted with the kind of confidence that might earn the approval of Mayahuel, the Aztec goddess of agave.
Continuing with the drinks, a wide range of wines, beers, tequilas, mezcals, liqueurs and sangria are available, along with non-alcoholic options including a mocktail named Juanita, made with pink grapefruit.
The entrée selection is generous, featuring jalapeño poppers filled with melted cheese, taquitos with a choice of pulled pork or beef, quesadillas, chicken wings and house-made chips with dip.
Moving onto mains, the Mexican staples are all there, including nachos, enchiladas and tostadas, each available with a choice of pulled pork, pulled beef, chicken, seafood or mushrooms.
There is also a chilli bowl with short ribs, along with tacos and other favourites.
However, it’s the fajitas that have become El Burro’s most popular dish. As servers move through the restaurant, the sizzle of the plates turns heads, and the aroma follows close behind.
A range of sides and salsas are available, along with six different house-made hot sauces placed on each table, with staff happy to explain the heat levels.
For those feeling brave, the aptly named Therapy Sauce, made from the Extreme Reaper chilli, certainly lives up to its reputation.
No dinner is complete without dessert, and El Burro offers homemade churros served with chocolate sauce, vanilla cream and raspberries, as well as a Poncho’s caramel tequila to finish.
What makes the menu even more impressive is that it is 100 per cent gluten free, including gluten free beer, ensuring no one misses out.
For larger groups, the Fiesta Menu offers a set selection of entrées, mains including tacos and fajitas, and churros for dessert, available in two or three courses.
