Fun and friendship in retirement is the aim of the Tamborine Mountain Combined Probus Club.

The group has been operating on the mountain for four years and has a membership of about 27.

As part of Probus month the group are holding a BBQ on October 25 at 12pm in Lions Park where anyone wanting to know more or to join is welcome to come along.

They hold regular monthly meetings on the third Wednesday of the month at the Bridge Club at the Long Road Sports Grounds where they also have guest speakers.

Each month members can participate in a variety of activities from the walking group, lunch group and dine out group to day outings as well as special occasions like Melbourne Cup Day and Christmas in July.

“It allows you to really get to know people and form friendships. It’s a lovely group of interesting people,” Brenda Miller said.

“Everyone has had their careers and families and it’s lovely to share stories.”

She said a lot of single people come along, which gives them a chance to meet others in a safe, friendly space, as well as people with varying levels of fitness.

The members have had day trips exploring areas around Southeast Queensland including IndigiScapes, walks around Brisbane and Ipswich and the elderflower farm at Kalbar.

“Some of the people don’t drive, so they don’t have the opportunity to venture out to many of the places we go,” Brenda said, adding that it was a great way for retirees and semi-retirees to keep their minds active and expand their interests.

The Tamborine Mountain Combined Probus Club is affiliated with Probus South Pacific which lets members join in overseas trips.

Probus began in the United Kingdom in 1965 and came to Australia in 1976 and is now a worldwide movement for men and women.
