IF YOU are looking to make friends and keep active, mentally or physically, you need to see what U3A has to offer.
Known as the University of the Third Age, U3A is a volunteer organisation which is typically for people over 50 years of age.
U3A Tamborine Mountain President Grahame Griffin has been involved with the organisation since 2010.
Membership has grown from around 40 or 50 people when the group started in 2007 to 270 members today.
Courses offered vary from line dancing and ballet through to pickleball, archaelogy and languages and what is offered is dependent on who volunteers to tutor or run courses.
“Last year I ran a course on the 19th century novel,” Grahame said.
“We kept it up for at least a year, which was pretty good, more than I expected.”
“We’re thinking this year, perhaps, of going into the 20th century.” Grahame’s course ran like a book club with members reading one book a month and getting together for a ‘good old chinwag about it’, as Grahame said.
The group is always looking for people with an interest, hobby or professional experience they would like to share as a U3A tutor.
Tutors can approach the U3A committee with a precis of what they would like to share and the committee can then approach members to gauge interest.
