New Zealand, with its stunning landscapes, rugged coastlines, and rich culture, is the perfect setting for an unforgettable train journey. I recently had the pleasure of experiencing the Great Journeys of New Zealand firsthand.
Our adventure began in the vibrant city of Wellington, where we crossed the Cook Strait on the Interislander Ferry to the South Island. Our first stop was the Marlborough region, known for its wines and food scene. A winery tour, with crisp Sauvignon Blanc and vineyard views, was a highlight, alongside a visit to the Arapawa Blue Pearl Farm to learn about pearl cultivation.
Next, we boarded the Coastal Pacific train, travelling south along New Zealand’s rugged coastline. The views from the train’s large windows showcased cliffs, golden beaches, and vineyards. Arriving into Kaikoura, a coastal town known for its dramatic scenery and wildlife, I knew I was in for something truly special. I had the opportunity to experience the Encounter Dolphin Swim. Swimming alongside playful dusky dolphins in their natural habitat was a surreal, unforgettable experience.
The TranzAlpine train was one of the highlights of our trip travelling from Christchurch across the Southern Alps to the West Coast, taking us through some of the country’s most stunning and rugged landscapes. The views were absolutely breathtaking. We travelled in Scenic Plus class, where we were treated to delicious food and drinks, all while enjoying a front-row seat to the spectacular vistas of the Southern Alps, along with exclusive access to our own Scenic Plus viewing carriage.
Continuing south, we stopped in Franz Josef, home to the famous glacier. We explored the awe-inspiring glacier and the West Coast Wildlife Centre, where we learned about New Zealand’s rare flightless bird, the Kiwi and incredibly rare Tuatara reptile, the last survivor of an ancient reptile order from the age of dinosaurs.
Next, we headed to Haast for the Haast River Safari, the only jet boat tour in New Zealand that takes you from the Ocean to the Alps within a UNESCO World Heritage Area. Our journey ended in Queenstown, where we visited Arrowtown and enjoyed a wine tasting at the Auyburn winery.
If you’re looking to truly immerse yourself in the best of New Zealand, the Great Journeys of New Zealand is an experience you won’t want to miss!
