The amazing Trapdoor Spider

Tamborine Mountain Trapdoor Spider – Euoplos variabilis, Joalah National Park.

The frame shows the exquisite geometry of the trap door. It is hard to credit that a spider is capable of constructing a lid of earth to hide its burrow, with such precision. Spiders are as adroit and ingenious at spinning webs, as they are at excavating soil. The species occurs on the mountain and in Lamington National Park. It is also known as the Golden Trapdoor Spider and is different to the one which is found in Brisbane.
