Our guest speaker for August was 27-year mountain resident, writer, horticulturist and Lyrebird Mountain author Julie Lake.
Julie began her professional life as a journalist, working in newspapers, radio and television.
Lyrebird Mountain was inspired by people and events associated with Tamborine Mountain and is the first Australian novel to be set on the mountain, proving to be very successful.
Julie related how she crafted her publication and marketing approach to American publishers, in line with today’s AI-driven world.
Julie’s books include Creating a Rainforest Garden, A Garden in Africa and Hilligei, a biography of the Tamborine Mountain naturalist and photographer Hilda Geissmann.
Her latest title, Landscaping with Australian Plants, will be published soon.

Colin Allen came to the mountain in 2023.
Colin began his work life as an engineer in process automation and control systems, before starting up his own company.
With a parallel career as a commercial pilot, he also worked on trading options on the US stock market and spent several years teaching courses in this discipline prior to roles in management and safety consulting until retirement.
His hobbies include photography, astrophotography, radio control aircraft and bushwalking.
Recently, Colin and his wife Ann, were in a serious car accident, from which they are still in recovery.
We wish them both a full rehabilitation.
Stephen Nuske hails from Western Victoria, entered a Lutheran seminary college at 17 years old and following ordination, was a Parish Pastor for over thirty years including challenging years at inner city parishes, chaplaincy roles, writings and commission memberships.
A move to Tamborine Mountain followed and in 2024 Stephen retired but continues with theological research, on which he has lectured.
Married with two adult children, Stephen is a former Rotarian, a Geelong Football Club member and follows Gold Coast Suns and Brisbane Lions.
