Simplify Christmas

Almost Christmas, so exciting to have this gorgeous holiday just around the corner. And so many themes about Christmas could be discussed in this article, it’s the one time in the world where everyone takes a big breath and smiles. The downside of Christmas is the excess. Buying and giving for the sake of gift swapping.  So, what about a minimalist Christmas?

Minimalism has heaps going for it and it’s a very yogic concept. A minimalist life emphasizes relationships and experiences over excess stuff. A simpler life is kinder to mother earth (all those unwanted gifts dumped at St Vinnies), your budget, your mind and an organised living environment allows you to be in control.

Minimalism is also an act of rebellion. Instead of being seduced by those lovely ads and frittering away your hard-earned cash, you’ve redirected your funds to an experience, an investment, a renovation to enhance your quality of life or a holiday with people you really love.

So, a few ideas for Christmas minimalists: Have a homemade rule. Gifts can be edible, functional or grown from the garden. Invest in multi-functional items that serve multiple purposes – universal docking stations, collaboration tools that combine messaging, file sharing, and project management. Repair broken items and if you have to replace it, invest in quality so the item goes the distance. Buy experiences – time with your children and loved ones will create deeper bonds and lasting memories.

Merry Christmas to all my readers and students!
