The Scenic Rim’s Eat Local Movement has been recognised at Queensland’s premier tourism awards.
The Eat Local Movement, which grew out of Eat Local Week, took out gold in the Queensland Tourism Awards for Excellence in Food Tourism.
Accepting the award on behalf of the Scenic Rim Regional Council, Mayor Tom Sharp said the gold award was a testament to the vision and dedication of the many producers, farmers, brewers, distillers, wine makers, restaurants and cafes behind the Eat Local Movement, which has not only won a string of awards but also national and international recognition for the region.
“This award is another shining example of what can be achieved when a local community comes together to connect visitors to food, culture and country,” he said.
Eat Local Movement encompasses the signature event Eat Local Month in June, the Farm Gate Trail (organised by Scenic Rim Tourism Organisation Destination Scenic Rim) and Scenic Rim Farm Box, which has now ceased trading.
Eat Local Month has become a smorgasbord of more than 120 events, with a focus on authentic paddock-to-plate food and farming experiences and culminates in the Winter Harvest Festival over the last weekend in June.
Tourism and Regional Events Portfolio councillor Jennifer Sanders said the award celebrates not just one program but the collective effort of an agritourism community that continues to elevate the region on state, national and international stages.
“A blend of passion for food and quality produce in immersive experiences, unforgettable events and mouth-watering products has been our region’s recipe for success,” Mayor Sharp said.
It was a winning night for several other local businesses with Tamborine Mountain Glades taking out gold in the RACQ People’s Choice Award for Accommodation and bronze in the Business Events Venues category.
Clandulla Cottages and Farm Stay at Boyland won a silver award for Hosted Accommodation.
