From growing one of Europe’s largest collections of hibiscus in Italy to taking the reins of one of South East Queensland’s most unique attractions, Bamboo Down Under owner Francesco Giufre is bringing decades of horticultural experience to an exciting new chapter.
To celebrate the nursery’s new ownership, Bamboo Down Under will host its Spring Festival on Saturday, August 29 and Sunday, August 30, inviting locals and visitors to explore its spectacular gardens while taking advantage of a massive plant clearance sale and family-friendly activities.
Originally from Sicily, Mr Giufre discovered his passion for horticulture after graduating as a mechanical engineer, eventually helping manage one of Europe’s largest hibiscus nurseries before moving to Australia with his wife, Margherita, in 2002.
Over the past 24 years, he has built successful horticultural businesses in New South Wales, producing foliage for the Sydney flower markets and developing a specialist grafted fruit tree nursery.
But it was a visit to the bamboo gardens that inspired his next adventure.
“The beautiful climate of South East Queensland drew us north, but it was Bamboo Down Under that truly captured my heart,” Mr Giufre said.
“The incredible bamboo gardens created by Rick Warwick and his wife over more than 30 years are something very special, and I feel privileged to continue their legacy.”
Mr Giufre said his vision was to build on that legacy by creating more than just a nursery.
“I want it to be a peaceful destination where visitors can wander through beautiful bamboo gardens, discover unique plants, enjoy flowers and fruit trees, and experience a place of inspiration, relaxation and connection with nature,” he said.
The Spring Festival provides the perfect opportunity for the community to experience everything Bamboo Down Under has to offer.
For the first time ever, the wholesale production nursery will be opened to the public, giving visitors exclusive access to areas normally closed while offering never-before-seen bargains, with selected plants discounted by up to 90 per cent.
Visitors of all ages can wander through towering bamboo forests, navigate the bamboo maze, hunt for hidden pandas, enjoy tranquil garden walks or simply relax beneath the cool canopy of one of Australia’s largest bamboo collections.
The weekend will also feature hot food, coffee, cold drinks, giveaways, lucky door prizes, face painting and a free gift for every child.
Penny the Panda will make special appearances from 10am to 1pm on both days, while well-behaved dogs on leads are also welcome.
“We look forward to welcoming the local community and sharing this beautiful place with you,” Mr Giufre said.
Bamboo Down Under is open from 9am to 5pm, seven days a week at 930 Tamborine Oxenford Road, Wongawallan.
