Gold Coast residents were treated to a heartwarming show of community spirit this week when a Junior Youth Group from Tamborine Mountain banded together to raise money for women’s shelters — and smashed expectations.
In a flurry of caramel slice, cake pops, cheese muffins, brownies, and homemade lemonade, the group — six girls aged between 10 and 14 — organised, baked, and hosted a charity bake sale that raised $427.02 in just 45 minutes. Every last item was sold out before the hour was up.
The idea started as a simple conversation among friends, but quickly became a well-planned mission. From designing colourful signs to baking everything themselves (with a little help from parents for the oven work), the girls took full charge.
“We wanted to do something that would help women who need a safe place to go,” said one of the organisers. “It felt good to know we could make a difference, even if we’re still young.”
Held on a sunny Tuesday afternoon after school outside the local Tamborine Mountain IGA, the sale drew in shoppers, locals, and curious passers-by. Popular items like caramel slice and brownies were gone within the first 20 minutes.
The funds will help provide essentials such as toiletries, bedding, and food for women in crisis situations.
Community members praised the Junior Youth Group not just for their baking, but for their drive and compassion. “It’s inspiring to see such young people taking initiative,” said one supporter. “They didn’t just ask for donations — they worked for it.”
This is the groups second community project. The first project saw them making paper flowers with thoughtful messages attached. The group then hand delivered these flowers to the elderly residents of Beaumont Care Nursing Home.
The Junior Youth Group welcomes anyone aged 10–14, male or female, who would like to join and be part of future service projects and community activities.
Their effort proves that sometimes, change really does start small — with sugar, flour, and a whole lot of heart.
