Scenic Rim Regional Councillors voted in favour of a new bin for garden waste, which will cost eligible ratepayers $224 per year, per household.
The service will be a 240 litre fortnightly garden organics collection service for all residential properties with a land size between 300m² and 4,000m² located within the densely populated areas.
There are 2508 eligible properties on Tamborine Mountain and six eligible properties in Tamborine.
Division Two Councillor Kerri Cryer introduced the item to the meeting, saying that as part of the scheme, all existing general waste green bins lids would be replaced with red lids.
This is to align with the Australian Standard standards for mobile garbage bin lid colours.
“While I understand there may be certain frustration around an added expense to provide this service it is a necessary change to the collection service provided by council in order to enhance the waste service for the region as we move to a future that is far more sustainable,” Cr Cryer said.
Cr Amanda Hay questioned the fee involved and whether there is an option to opt out of the service.
A Council officer said the additional cost would be $224 per household. He stated there is criteria which must be met for households to opt out of the scheme.
