The mounds appear after heavy rain. I have never seen ant activity on them.
The ants tend to remain underground as they consume aphids on the grass roots and any insect that falls down the funnel.
The expert stated that the species is most likely Aphaenogaster pythia, which builds mounds on verges, lawns and playing fields in eastern Australia, particularly in Queensland.
I have not found definitive information about the number and extent of the nests based on the number of mounds.
I filmed the mounds in 2000 and photographed the queen ant crawling on a wall in 2016.
