Clogged corridors, bed shortages and ballooning surgical waitlists were behind 5,143 elective surgery cancellations in public hospitals across Queensland last year (including 649 in the Gold Coast Health Region).
These sobering figures obtained through a Parliamentary Question on Notice also revealed 705 surgeries were cancelled in the first two months of this year.
These aren’t just numbers on a spreadsheet, these are Queenslanders desperate for cataracts or knee surgery or a hip replacement. I have heard from locals in this region about how distressing it is when surgeries are cancelled. On occasions I’ve heard of multiple cancellations.
These cancellations were not the fault of our hardworking doctors and nurses who have worked themselves to the brink of exhaustion. The system is not working because of a failure to plan on the part of the Queensland Government.
I will keep on working to hold this Government to account while our team puts forward positive solutions to heal the Queensland Health Crisis.
Police presence
I thank all our local police for the work they do in serving our community.
I hear from them, and I hear from you, that unfortunately there is not enough of them on the ground.
The latest numbers show 322 fewer police in 18 short months under Labor. That’s despite Labor promising to deliver 1450 additional police, over and above attrition, at the last election. On Tamborine Mountain, in Beaudesert and across the region, our police are stretched thin.
I will continue to highlight the need for more police, backed by Government action on retention and attraction, and to deliver a justice system that backs our police. Making our community safer is a priority for the LNP because it’s a priority for Queenslanders.
