Happily, Saturday May 16 presented a break in the wet conditions to enable the club championship singles finals to be conducted, seeing reigning champion Susie Radford taking on challenger Sue Arthur, and Lance Cordingley playing Barry Chatel.
Susie, now a back to back singles champ, played some mighty bowls to win the title, but didn’t have it all her own way, as Sue belied her relative inexperience to force Susie to excel.
Barry has been in rare form and continued in that form to defeat Lance.
In an interesting twist, both finals finished at the same time and with the same scores!
The timing of the finish had nothing to do with the barbecue celebration of the club’s District Sevens win, as the festivities had commenced prior to play.
It is very pleasing to report that the prestigious Vance Bell pairs tournament was held on Saturday May 23, deferred due to rain.
Congratulations to the winners of the day, Andy Wilton and Paul Adams from Mermaid Beach Bowls Club.
Round winners were Richard Knight and Shane Stevenson from MacKenzie Park for round 1, David Grant and Ruby Jones from Mermaid Beach for round 2, and Lance Cordingley and Jessee Ireland from Tamborine Mountain for round 3.
The lucky losers also shared in the spoils, being Vonnie Melville and Robyn Fulwood from MacKenzie Park.
This was such a great event, only made possible with the valued assistance of our major sponsor Tamborine Mountain Optometrists, and their representative Virginia Tullemans attended with Dawn Vance to hand the winners their prizemoney and the Vance Bell.
The club has a quick turnaround to their next tournament, the Winter Fours, to be held on Saturday, June 20, 2026, which is already pretty well-subscribed, so any teams that have not entered, please do so promptly.
