Tamborine Mountain Basketball’s weekly scrimmage sessions are providing local residents of all ages and abilities with a relaxed and social way to get involved in the sport.
Held on Friday and Sunday evenings, the sessions welcome everyone from first-time players through to experienced junior representative athletes, with an emphasis on participation, fitness and community connection rather than competition.
Tamborine Mountain Basketball vice president Leila McKail said the scrimmages had played an important role in the club’s history.
“Casual scrimmage was how the club started back in 2019, where adults and teenagers from the community would get together at the Vonda Youngman Centre for a weekly shoot out,” she said.
“After a brief hiatus it’s back, welcoming boys and girls of all ages and skill levels.”
The sessions cater for players from seven years of age through to adults, with younger siblings often joining in on mini hoops while families take part in the activities.
Unlike a traditional basketball competition, the scrimmages focus on enjoyment and skill development in a less structured environment.
“Scrimmage is more relaxed, less competitive and an opportunity to come and try basketball,” Mrs McKail said.
“Mini games, friendly competitions and adults versus kids are some of the weekly activities.”
Participants are regularly rotated through different teams to ensure everyone has the opportunity to play alongside and against a variety of people.
Mrs McKail said the sessions provided an important social outlet for the community.
“Social basketball on the mountain gives locals an opportunity to get onto a basketball court with no pressure, have some fun, meet other locals and catch up with friends,” she said.
“Parents have an opportunity to have fun and connect with their kids and it allows players with different abilities to come together and enjoy a less competitive version of basketball.”
She said newcomers were supported throughout the sessions, making the scrimmages an ideal introduction to the sport.
“Scrimmage is such a good vibe and perfect for first timers looking for a non-competitive weeknight physical activity for their kids,” Mrs McKail said.
“It’s fun, social, active and best of all community orientated.”
Scrimmages are held at the Vonda Youngman Centre on Fridays, with Under 10 and Under 12 sessions starting at 5pm and Open Age at 6pm.
Sunday scrimmages are held at Tamborine Mountain State High School, with Under 14s at 4pm, Open Girls at 5pm and Open Age at 6pm.
