Barry humbled by his award

THE latest local to be handed the honour of life membership of the Tamborine Mountain Probus Club believes he is unworthy of the recognition because he is just doing something he loves.

While humbled by the award Barry Chick said joining the club almost 12 years ago had played an important part in his life on the mountain.

Invited along by a real estate client to see what Probus was all about turned out to be a regular commitment and joy for the now 81 year old.

Barry first arrived in Tamborine Mountain by total accident when he called into the township during a three month around-Australia drive holiday.

“I immediately felt a connection to the area and this year marks my 26th anniversary as a local,” he said.

Like the connection he felt to the district when he drove in towing his camper trailer behind his old car, Barry also felt the same warmth when he attended his first Probus Club meeting.

Since that first meeting he has rarely been absent from the monthly get-togethers and in 2015 he was elected President.

He encouraged other mature aged men to also take up the opportunity to join Probus where he said they would find friendship and like-minded individuals who cared about others and the local community.

“We meet on the third Wednesday of every month between 10am and 12 noon at the Vonda Youngman Community Centre and at the moment we have more than 80 members,” he said.

“Besides the regular meetings we have special interest groups such as the writing group I’m a member of.

“Just like life the more you put into being a member of Probus the more you will get out of it,” Barry said.
